Accommodations and Homestays

Teachers Latin America knows that important to every single program participant is the answer to the question...

but where will I stay?

As part of every program and program combination, your Advisor will ask about your preference for living quarters. Your accommodations during the TEFL certificate course in Mexico City is included in your tuition. You will stay either with a host family, close to the classroom, or can stay in a nearby hostel where Mexico City teachers and all-programs participants frequently stay for short to mid-length periods. As of January 2005, most TEFL students choose to group together for easier work on evening projects. Choosing to stay at the Hostel R&B or Hostal Casa Vieja with your classmates means free Internet access. Please note that a homestay option during the TEFL study period is not always available.

What is the Hostel R&B or Hostal Casa Vieja? Teachers Latin America program participants are offered special rates if you want to stay longer or arrive earlier, or anytime you find yourself in Mexico City. The Hostels are in a quiet neighborhood within walking distance from the school.

Ask your Advisor about these options.

More important is to consider accommodations for the long term, that is, in the city and country you've chosen for a teaching position or internship. Your Advisor will ask you questions as to your preferences, always keeping your budget and teaching income in mind.

There are three basic choices when considering accommodations.

  • Homestay - a rented room with a host family
  • Furnished apartment
  • Connecting with other Teachers in the field

When looking at accommodations options, your Advisor considers; cost (roughly 25% of your teaching income, depending on city and country), location (close to transport links and services), connectivity (your ability to access other teachers, language courses, tourist sites, and criteria you select).

As cost-of-living tables vary widely from country to country in Latin America, it is best to ask your Advisor about accommodations costs after having selected a short list of potential cities and countries for your programs.

Of course, your Advisor will also guide you to your accommodations as needed, from airports, bus stations, metro terminals, and to meetings with local contacts.
