Language Courses in Latin America

Research tells us that most people considering Teachers Latin America do so not only for the opportunity of working in a foreign country, but also to learn about the culture and language. With over 20 countries to choose from, our program participants will find a great variety of both culture and styles of Spanish, Portuguese, and over 100 other indigenous languages.

Teachers Latin America offers a variety of opportunities for connecting to language study programs in Latin America.

The most common option is to enroll in an intensive Spanish or Nahuact course when in Mexico for the TEFL certificate course. Also common is for participants, from any program, to have Teachers Latin America enroll them into language courses in their chosen destination for a paid TEFL position. For example, a TEFL Online course participant may choose both a TEFL position and Spanish language course in Buenos Aires, Argentina, or a Portuguese language course in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Costs for language programs vary widely across Latin America. Some examples are cited in the Program Costs link in the Quick Jump Menu.

The Flavors of Spanish

While Spanish is considered one of the easiest languages to learn, it is certainly not spoken the same everywhere.

People from Mexico City (chilangos) speak Spanish with a slower pace, accentuating the final syllable of a word or phrase with a higher pitch, and an elongated sound.

Northern Mexicans (norteños) have a distinct twang in their accent and draw heavily on American English

A little Italian spice? Argentines, particularly those from Buenos Aires (porteños) have a distinct vocabulary and an accent that is heavily influenced by Italian.

Apparently, people from Ecuador are always angry! (Ecuatorianos) speak a louder, more brash Spanish than their neighbors. They also gesticulate a lot.

Brasil? Los Brasileños speak Portuguese of course. With style.
